The "Habanera" is Carmen's first Aria in the opera, "Carmen," by George Bizet (1875). This scene from the opera takes place in the city of Seville around the year 1820. The women from the tobacco factory are on their break in a public square. The men from the neighborhood are waiting for all of the women to come outside, but especially they are hoping to see Carmen. At first she does not come out of the factory, and all of the men are very disappointed; but finally she appears, singing her famous
song - the "Habanera."
