Politics Makes Good Theater in "Catfight"
Now playingNew episodeohn Ervin, the writer, director and producer of "Catfight" invited me to a dress rehearsal at a Methodist church in Prospect Park on Monday. Outside the weather was hot and muggy, but the heat in the windowless room on the top floor of the church was stifling, a grim reminder that actors (and videographers) must suffer for their art. More at www.theuptake.org. The cast includes Republicans and Democrats, including one actor who phone-banks and delivers lawn-signs for the Bachmann campaign. "Catfight" doesn't spare liberals or conservatives.
Netroots Nation Markos and More
Now playingNew episodeThe UpTake's Chuck Olsen interviews Markos Moulitsas, founder of Daily Kos, about whether the progressive site can maintain its outsider/agitator status if Dems come to power in the White House.
In Depth Front Groups and Fraud in MN Senate Race
Now playingNew episodeMore at www.theuptake.org. This past week in Minnesota we've seen the Senate Race between Sen. Norm Coleman and Al Franken become an epic proxy battle between corporations and unions over the Employee Free Choice Act. Find out why and what it means in the video.
A Troubled District 1 Cole Arts and Sciences Academy
Now playingNew episodeMore at www.theuptake.org. Denver Public Schools (DPS) have been troubled on and off for several years. This year they closed several elementary schools, and are locked in argument with the teachers union. Two of the closed elementary schools, Wyman and Mitchell, will be merging into the old Cole Middle School building. It will become the Cole Arts and Sciences Academy, a pre K through 8 program. Back on June 28th, a coalition of volunteers from Metro Volunteers, Democrats Work (a Democratic service organization), and members of the schools future staff got together to make the building welcoming for younger and older students alike.
Rove in Prison Stripes Rep Keith Ellison Speaks
Now playingNew episodeMore at http://www.theuptake.org. "A gross politicalization" is Congressman Keith Ellison's assessment of the Department of Justice hiring scandal. He spoke with The UpTake's Ken Avidor about Monica Goodling, a former US Attorney and Bush political appointee, who is accused of finagling the firings of several left-leaning attorneys in order to, as Ellison says,"make sure she infuses the federal bureaucracy with a right-wing stamp." Eliison also addresses the controversial Don Siegelman case, in which the former Democratic governor of Alabama was yanked out of office to fight corruption charges. A corrupt politician isn't news these days. What is news? The fact that Karl Rove has been accused of cooking up fictional scenarios to politically decapitate Siegelman, and has subsequently ignored subpeonas demanding he answer the charge. Will Rove go to federal prison?
Denver "Secret" Detention Center/Caged Free Speech
Now playingNew episodeMore at www.theuptake.org. The city of Denver has been very secretive about its plans for dealing with protesters during the DNC. First, no one could find out where the "Free Speech Zone" was going in, then the parade route lottery was kept under wraps, and so on. Finally journalists got wind of a secret detention center with a high capacity for holding people. The race was on, as a blogger pinpointed the location and the local CBS affiliate managed to get inside and film. I spoke to several protest organizers at a press conference at the secret detention center location during a small, but relatively well attended press conference. We talked about the detention center, but also about their frustrations with the current electoral system and what they hoped to achieve in their protests at the DNC. Thanks to Erin Rosa of the ColoradoIndependent.com for putting me on this story. Please see her excellent and detailed story, including a history of the building, and more detail on potential problems and conditions.
China Boots Live Video Streamer
Now playingNew episodeMore at http://www.theuptake.org This is not what democracy looks like. Citizen journalist Noel Hidalgo streamed live web video of protests in Tiananmen Square by activist group, Students for a Free Tibet. Hidalgo was detained by Chinese authorities and deported, along with the demonstrators. Congressman s Paid Consultant Disrupts Opponents Campaigns
Now playingNew episodeMore at www.theuptake.org. Remember the uproar over a supporter of Democrat Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton asking a question at the Republican Presidential debate? The problem was not that Retired Brig. Gen. Keith H. Kerr asked a question. It was that he and CNN didn't identify him as a co-chairman of Clinton's National Military Veterans Group. A similar case of non-transparency happened recently involving a person with strong ties to Minnesota Congressman John Kline and his campaign. The UpTake investigated and found the lack of transparency was only the tip of the iceberg in this story. More in this video from Mike McIntee.
